Glutathione is having a moment. It is one of the top beauty and wellness hashtags right now, sold as the "master antioxidant" that detoxes and brightens from the inside out. So here is the question your body would want you to ask before you buy another bottle: can you even use it?

Glutathione is not something you stock up on. Your body makes it, uses it, and reuses it, over and over, all day long.
Why taking more can stall
Everyone has a natural limit to how fast their body can move it through. Pour in more than yours can handle and the extra just backs up. Some people are simply born with a smaller opening.
The pitch is simple and seductive. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant your body makes, so swallow more of it and you detox harder, glow brighter, age slower. Clean story. The problem is that it treats glutathione like a fuel tank you top up. That is not what it is.
01Glutathione is a system, not a stockpile
Picture a loop, not a tank. Your body builds glutathione from raw materials, uses it to grab onto things it wants to clear, and then recycles it back into service. It is a cycle that runs all day. You do not really "fill it up." You keep it turning.
And here is the part the marketing skips. The grabbing and clearing is not done by glutathione alone. It is done by enzymes. Those enzymes are coded for by your genes. So how well the whole thing works depends less on the pill in your hand and more on the machinery your genes handed you.
02Meet your detox genes, in plain English
There is a family of genes that does the actual hand-off work. In science they are called glutathione S-transferases, part of what people label Phase II detox. Ignore the jargon. Think of them as the loading crew that clips glutathione onto a compound so your body can carry it out the door.
Two of the big ones are GSTM1 and GSTT1. A very common human variation is a full deletion of one of these genes, which researchers call a "null" genotype. If the gene is deleted, that particular enzyme is not being made, and studies associate that with lower activity for that step. This is not rare and it is not a disease. It is common human variation. Estimates for the GSTM1 null genotype run widely across populations, often cited somewhere around 20 to 60 percent.
Then there is NQO1, the recycler. It helps process certain reactive compounds and supports keeping antioxidants in their active form. A common variation lowers its activity too.
You do not need to memorize any of that. You only need the shape of it: the detox work runs through enzymes, the enzymes come from genes, and those genes vary a lot from person to person.

If your genes gave you fewer working lanes, what happens when you pour more cargo onto the road? You do not get flow. You get a traffic jam.
That, in my opinion, is the flaw in "swallow more glutathione to detox harder." If the hand-off and the recycler are the limit, adding raw glutathione does not widen the road. It just adds cars. The bottleneck was never the amount of glutathione. It was the machinery moving it.
The bottleneck was never how much glutathione you had. It was the lanes your genes gave you to move it.
04What the evidence actually says about the pill
There is also a plain evidence problem. Independent reviews find limited support that oral glutathione produces meaningful "detox" or general anti-aging effects beyond modestly raising internal antioxidant stores. The skin-brightening claims that drive a lot of the sales are, at best, inconsistent and not guaranteed.
I am not telling you glutathione is worthless or that you should avoid it. I am telling you the story on the label is oversimplified, and buying more of it will not out-muscle a slow pathway. Popular is not the same as right for your body. That is the whole thesis of how I work.
05How to tell you are probably being oversold
Here is the part the ads will never run. You cannot confirm your glutathione status, or your detox genes, from a symptom list. The "are you depleted?" quizzes lean on complaints so vague and universal that almost everyone checks a few boxes. That is the tell. In my opinion, these are the signs you are more likely being marketed to than actually running low.
You generally feel well. Steady energy, normal digestion, and a normal bounce back from workouts and colds. A body under real strain usually shows more than a vague off day.
You already eat the raw materials. Your body builds glutathione from sulfur-rich foods like garlic, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and eggs, plus enough protein. If those are in your week, you are already feeding the system the ad wants to sell back to you.
You sleep decently and do not drink much. Poor sleep and alcohol are two of the biggest everyday drains on this pathway. If neither is a heavy habit, there is far less pulling on it.
Your complaints have simpler explanations. Fatigue, brain fog, and bloating point to sleep, stress, blood sugar, iron, or thyroid long before they point to glutathione. Reaching for the trendy antioxidant can distract from the boring thing that is actually going on.
The only reason it is on your radar is an ad. If nothing about your health raised the question except a video telling you that everyone is toxic, that is a marketing signal, not a body signal.
The people research actually studies for low glutathione tend to be under real, identifiable load, such as chronic illness, a heavy medication burden, or smoking. Not healthy adults with a busy week. None of this is a diagnosis, and only your provider can speak to your situation. But if you see yourself in the list above, popular is not the same as needed.
06So what would I actually look at
None of this is a treatment plan, and I cannot tell you your detox capacity from a symptom list or a social media quiz. What I can say is where the useful curiosity lives.
Support the loop, do not just flood it. Your body builds glutathione from sulfur-rich building blocks found in everyday foods. Sleep, stress, and alcohol all pull on the same system. Boring inputs move this more than a fancy bottle.
Look at your own genes. Whether you carry a GSTM1 or GSTT1 null genotype, or a lower-activity NQO1, is knowable. It reframes the question from "which glutathione brand" to "how is my pathway actually built."
Pair it with the rest of the picture. Your genes are one signal. Your bloodwork and your daily habits are the others. In my view, detox capacity only makes sense when you read all of them together, with a provider who knows your history.
07The takeaway
The glutathione trend is not entirely wrong. Glutathione really is central to how your body handles everyday load. The mistake is treating it like a button you press by swallowing.
It is a loop, run by enzymes, coded by genes that vary from person to person. Once you see it that way, the honest question stops being "how much glutathione should I take" and becomes "how is my pathway built, and what does it actually need." That is a better question. It also happens to be the one your biology has been asking all along.
